ON-DEMAND CONTINUING EDUCATION CLASSES FOR HEALTH CARE INTERPRETERS

A Health Care Interpreter is an individual who has been assessed for professional skills, demonstrates a high level of proficiency in at least two languages, and has the appropriate training and experience to interpret with skill and accuracy while adhering to the National Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice published by the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care. Overview

At OHCIA, we recognize the critical importance of receiving high-quality, on-demand continuing educational units (CEUs) to maintain credentials. It’s our goal to help Health Care Interpreters (HCIs) by providing up-to-date CEUs at a fraction of the cost when you need them and where you need them. 

Our self-paced courses are designed to allow you the flexibility to complete CEUs in the timeframe that works best for your schedule. Each course is a two-hour session and is worth 2 CEUs. After you complete each training, you will immediately have access to your course completion certificate. Each course has a $35 enrolment fee.

Review each CEU course to verify that it is approved for CEUs by the organization(s) with which you hold a credential.

CEU Renewal Requirements 

OHA: HCI’s who are currently Certified or Qualified by the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) are required by law to renew their HCI letters and state HCI registry enrollment after 4 years, by completing the following in the order of importance:

Requirements for Renewal: 24 hours of continuing education from accredited organizations.

They must include:

  • Six hours of health care interpreter ethics
  • Six hours of interpretation skills
  • 12 Hours of Any Topic Approved by the National Board for Certification of Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) or the Certification Commission for Health Care Interpreters (CCHI)

Renewal requirements and application must be submitted 60 days before the expiration date.

Mary Soots, BA, MA is an Anthropologist, social researcher and policy analyst, as well as a
Certified Health Care Interpreter (Spanish). She is Adjunct Professor of Anthropology at
Portland State University, is the former Director of Education Programs for the Oregon Health
Care Interpreters Association (OHCIA), and provides training to health professionals. Mary holds
a M.A. and B.A. in Anthropology from Portland State University, a B.A. in International Studies,
as well as Minor Degrees in Spanish and in Geography.


Course Description: Interpreters are often requested for appointments dealing with different types of addictions. It's high time interpreters learn about substance use disorder, classified as a disease, and other types of addictions that are classified as mental health disorders. If you are craving a fix for delving into this topic, satisfy your craving as we explore the types of appointments such as outpatient and inpatient screenings, intake evaluations, treatment, or discharge from inpatient facilities. We explore genetic, environmental, and psychological factors which can lead to addiction, effects of addiction, co-occurring conditions, and treatment modalities. If you are Jonesing to learn clinical and recovery terminology, as well as street names for substances and behaviors, this class is for you. We will apply the principles of Interpreter Ethics in relation to interpreting addiction appointments, as well as interpreter self-care.
